This is Andy Votel's first album proper. If you don't know who Andy
Votel is, then this should explain it all to you:
Spending his teenage years providing beats (and rhymes) in various
Northern hip hop crews and playing warm up slots in the odd
Manchester club, Andy Votel quickly became familiar face on the
underground scene, bringing him, along with his old-time partner in
crime Rick Myers, a remix for the up and coming fellow Stockport
oddbod Mr Scruff. This soon led to the recording of a handful of solo
projects for Grand Central (for whom he until recently provided all
the design work) including a cover version of Black Sabbath's 'Hand
Of Doom', a stand out track on their highly acclaimed "Central
Heating" compilation.
Described as "a leading light in abstract electronica" at last years
In The City event, Andy's unique psyche cinematic soundscapes have
brought a wide range of remix and production work to his doorstep.
Endless credits include Death in Vegas, Texas, Lamb, Elbow, Kings Of
Convenience, Ian Brown and Badly Drawn Boy.
Andy had learnt his DJ skills with a history of acclaimed residences
in the North playing obscure and challenging music at clubs such as
Headfunk, Frying the Fat, Electric Chair, Rock'n'Roll Bar and Missing
Link.
His ability to educate and entertain in equal measures has now seen
Andy play to a host of International audiences single-handedly as
well as on tours with Badly Drawn Boy, Mouse on Mars, Add N to (X)
and The Avalanches
As a result of three years travelling, touring, designing, running
the label and remixing other artists, Andy finally pooled his
influences and committed his long-awaited solo return to disc.
Last year's Styles Of The Unexpected, Votel's debut mini-LP for
Twisted Nerve/XL Recordings featured collaborations with fellow
Twisted Nerve folksters Alfie and veteran manc singer/songwriter Jane
Weaver.
Styles Of The Unexpected encompasses a wide variety of influences
such as surf-rock, electronica, hip hop, french pop, European
soundtracks and post-rock. He is currently back in the studio working
on various collaborations and a debut album proper.
Andy has also recently compiled a volume of rare vintage psychedelic,
electronic and jazz obscurities for his "Finders Keepers" project
(Fat City Records) providing a further insight into exactly what
Votel and Twisted Nerve are all about.
