Here we have a crisp & clean CD rip, fresh out the shrinkwrap, for a
long-awaited [two f'in decades!], properly mixed and mastered reissue of
gangster rap album of legendary status. If Dazzie Dee isn't an OG in the truest
sense then they don't exist. And with the Battlecat production that runs all
through this, good lawd! ---- look, you know Battlecat, even if you don't know
who Battlecat is by name, you know Battlecat. trust me if you've listened to rap
music in the last 30 years you've heard Battlecat before. And having Battlecat
produce damn near you're entire 18-track album? That's a reallllllly good thing
, and likely something Battlecat ain't gonna do but for MAYBE a handful of
people, if at all. This album is on legendary status for good reason - it's
fucking great! And this is the best sounding version of it by a longshot.
Bout goddamn time, fuck you Capitol Records! It only took 22 1/2 years from the
original recording for this masterpeice to get an 'official' full retail
release. It was intended to be the follow-up to Dazzie's first album 'The
Re-Birth' (a masterpiece in it's own right). Originally slated for release in
1997, but it never came out, not 'offically'. There was, eventually, a single &
video for the "On My Cide Remix" with Coolio & Tha Chill from Compton's Most
Wanted, briefly featuring Dazzie Dee's pop-locking skills and Battlecat's ...
whatever the hell he does to make that beat knock like thunder. Then later on
down the line some bootlegged/dubbed-to-death copies of a radio promo that
Capitol had pressed up made it's way into collector circles [this is the
pre-Internet days. pre - layer 3 mpeg codec days, so no mp3s anyway! shit, im
gettin old] but it wasn't mixed/mastered well, if at all -- and it was missing a
few tracks from what eventually ended up on the album. No 'proper' retail
release ever materialized back then. Capitol Records shelved it because...
reasons?/they're cunts?/money???? who the hell knows... but in any case '97 came
and went with no 2nd Dazzie Dee album and no word on what when or why. They
blackhole'd this shit for some reason.
Fast forward to the 2008-09 era. I don't know who at that point in time
technically owned the rights to what was previously recorded, but Dazzie Dee
ain't got no more time for that bull shit -- He starts his own independant
label, and [*allegedly*] pressed up some copies on his own dime, minus some
barcodes and trademarks and whatnot. He *allegedly* sold them in mom&pops and
out of the trunk of his car on the streets of South Central Los Angeles.
Allegedly. Or so legend has it....
Some more years later and here we are. Finally with a proper, mixed and
mastered, retail reissue release. It sounds great. I almost lit my amplifier on
fire and blew up some 12" subs with it an hour ago. It was awesome. This
includes 18 tracks, with both versions of the single from back in the day, 'On
My Cide!' The one with coolio & tha chill could be considered the remix,
although not labelled as such. With "part 2" being dazzie's solo version. Hard
to say which one is better, but that beat... Holy Fishscales Boston George -
that beat, god damn!
The whole thing is a masterpiece, it's right up there with the other ultimate
underground albums on legendary status - your bonafied classics such as Rappin'
Ron & Ant Diddley Dog's [Bad N-Fluenz], Yound Ed's Time To Stack, right up there
next to the BG'z from NOLA who in 1995 put out one of the best lyrical rap
records in history that nobody knows about because a month later Master P &
Friends flipped the entire music business on it's head from inside the projects
next door [Young Gangstas - Pre-Meditated Gangstarism].
The entire thing - intro to outro, daycare to grey hair - is solid as it gets.
#12 even features the one and only Mix Master Spade (Rest In Peace, OG). Before
him Compton rap wasn't SHIT! Enjoy this one folks. Everyone should have this
album, and Dazzie Dee's first one The Re-Birth as well, in their collection --
at the very least a digital copy. ITS A REALLY FUCKIN GOOD CD, So here - take
it. Take it alllllllllll!
You can bump this one as u ride, as you chill, and as you smoke. Can't go wrong.
